A SWM Volunteer B-B-Q Get-Together

In early September 26 people who support SWM by volunteering in different ways volunteers and group facilitators, together with their partners and some of our members, got together for a thank you b-b-q, organised by South Wilts Mencap, and held at the Community Farm situated in Cow Lane, Laverstock.
Representatives from the Mencap Shop, our Music Group, the very popular New Horizon Gateway Club and the Committee all enjoyed sausages, burgers, a very large salad and plenty of wine and juices! The evening turned into a fun social event with local singer and song-writer Sean Rice providing some folk and blues back-ground music.

Those who wanted were given a tour of the Farm by two of the Community Farm regular volunteers Dawn and her son Scott: a real treat! We tried our hands at hand-feeding Sophie, one of the goats, and called in on the pigs, the cattle and the rather large cockerel too.

To cap the evening, which actually featured more sun than cloud, there were three South Wilts Mencap Volunteer and Facilitator Awards The Volunteer Achievement Award was won by Elizabeth Nielsen (and the Team at the Catherine Street Shop). The Team Builder Award was won by Greg Read (our Chairman since 2003). And the “Going that extra mile” Award was won by Maureen Thomas (Facilitator of the New Horizon Club).

The second picture shows the two hard-working runner-ups for this Award: Frances Howard (Music Group) and Alan Westcott (driver, group helper and Breakaway helper) - Margaret Strange, Deputy Chairman presented the Award.
