Jill Mortimer (Continued)
Last but certainly not least we have to thank Jill for pressing the Society
to take the lease on a vacant shop she had spotted in Catherine Street. With
the team headed by Betty Williams the doors opened in 1983, with the
outstanding results we all know so well. Jill, with her husband Les, was a
driver not just of the original idea but the subsequent move to larger
premises now owned by the Society. And of course almost to the end Jill was
a shop volunteer, as well as becoming one of the team of Shop Managers after
Betty’s death. The magnificent work of the Shop has meant that generations
of South Wiltshire families no longer need to struggle with jumble sales and
market stalls to fund the amazing range of activities that the Society
offers.
We are sure that there are many other projects unknown to us that Jill
supported, giving 100% to everything. Without her enthusiasm, sympathy and
understanding the members of the
Society, past and present would still be struggling to achieve quality
of life for people with learning disability in South Wiltshire. We are
all very grateful for all that Jill has done and
achieved in a well spent life.
