A new ‘Learn to Earn’ – Transition Project:

A new ‘Learn to Earn’ transition project has been running for approximately 3 months at Wiltshire College to…
‘support students with learning difficulties and learning disabilities to gain
and maintain employment after college’.

The project does this by helping current and ex students of Wiltshire College to:
• identify their employment interests
• identify their strengths & weaknesses
• carry out job searches
• complete application forms
• provides support through the interview process
• and supports individuals in the work place.

Once someone has a job, the team will support them to learn the job and build relationships with their employer and colleagues. As they become more independent support is reduced until they are able to work without our help, with the support of their employer and colleagues.

The team works to provide creative solutions to potential barriers, such as lack of independent travel skills or low levels of literacy and numeracy and also aim to support employers by helping them to fill their vacancies with the right people for the job, and acting as support when questions or difficulties arise.

The project is funded until January 2010 by the Learning Skills Council (LSC). It works with young people and employers across Wiltshire and the team is made up of a Lead Transition Worker, based at the Chippenham Wiltshire College site, and 2 Transition Workers based at the Salisbury and Trowbridge College sites.

Do you know someone who needs help looking for and keeping a job after college?
To be considered for the project you must:
• want paid employment
• be 16-25yr olds
• live in Wiltshire
• have learning difficulties or a learning disability though not necessarily formally be statemented
• be students of Wiltshire College, or have left Wiltshire College, within the past 2 years. Some individuals that have left within 3 years will be considered.

New referrals and informal discussions are welcomed. To make a referral or for more information please contact Katherine Brownlee, Lead Transition Worker on 07787514283 or at kath.brownlee@wiltshire.ac.uk or Jane Crowther, Transition worker Wiltshire College Salisbury Mobile 07788572563
