What we do

South Wilts Mencap is an independent local charity, started by local parents some 50 years ago and affiliated to the Royal Mencap Society. We get our funds from our charity shop in Catherine Street, through grants and by other fund raising. We are entirely voluntary with some paid staff support. We provide some services ourselves and work in partnership with other organisations, both statutory and voluntary, to provide others. We see our major role as lobbying and campaigning for changes in attitudes and service provision to enable people with learning disabilities to make the most of life.

We provide -
• Grants to individuals, and to pump prime new developments
• Our hugely successful Breakaway holidays and leisure programme
• A Minibus used by local people with learning disabilities.
• A Quarterly Newsletter.
• The New Horizon Gateway Club, and Saturday Clubs for children run in partnership with others, provide opportunities for socialising and fun.
• In partnership with Elizabeth House Social Club we work to provide additional opportunities for volunteering both for and with people with learning disabilities.
• We make annual awards to recognise the achievements of people with learning disabilities and family carers.
• We support a number of sporting activities including the Salisbury Tigers football club
• A number of arts activities including music workshops
• And our New Year Party is the high spot of the year for many people!
