South Wiltshire Learning Disability Development Group (LDDG):

This group, in existence for over 15 years, is the only one in South Wiltshire that includes service users, carers, and representatives of statutory bodies and voluntary organisations involved in the care of people with learning disabilities. It is now part of the Learning Disability Partnership Board and represents South Wiltshire. There are similar groups in North Wilts, West Wilts and Kennet with the main Partnership Board (to which all groups send representatives) meeting five times a year. Learning Disability Partnership Boards were set up after the Government White Paper Valuing People was issued in 2001.

The group meets 5 times a year, usually at the Salvation Army Hall We meet in the Methodist Church(but sometimes at the Methodist Church) in Salisbury and is managed by Wessex Community Action. Attendance has grown over the years and is now averaging 30.

Meetings give an opportunity to exchange information, to raise concerns and for professionals to respond. Much has been achieved in Wiltshire since the Government published its Learning Disability Strategy White Paper ‘Valuing People’ in 2001 setting a challenging agenda to deliver services that will guarantee people with a learning disability rights, social inclusion, choice and independence. One of the LDDG’s key roles is to feed into the Wiltshire Learning Disability  Partnership Board which is tasked with taking forward the Valuing People agenda. The new White Paper "Valuing People Now" published in the spring of 2008 sets challenging targets to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities to be met in the next 3 years.

The main Wiltshire Learning Disability Partnership Board is now Front entrance of Methodist Churchmore streamlined and in order to meet the objectives of "Valuing People Now" has commissioned four task groups on Health, Housing, Employment and Better Days to prepare recommendations for action. The group is therefore very pro-active in endeavouring to meet the needs of those with a learning disability.
