The central philosophy of Royal Mencap’s Housing and Support Service is to provide people with learning disabilities with ordinary homes in ordinary streets, with a level of support tailored to the need of the particular people in an individual home. Places in MHSS are funded from a mixture of sources such as residents’ own benefits, social services, health and housing benefit.

 The Service Development Manager is responsible both for the development of new homes and the line management of existing homes. Admissions to a home are often arranged by the Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities, but an individual or a family may also approach the Service Development Manager directly.
