Salisbury Portage:
Portage supports the families of children up to age 5 who have developmental delay. A principle of the Portage model of support is that parents play a vital role in all children’s learning and development, and where a child’s development is slower than usual, or there is a specific disability, parents will want to help but may not always be sure of the best way to do this. Portage is designed to help with this, by weekly visits to families in their own home by specially trained home visitors who will help to find out what a child can do and what the next steps should be. The aim is to make learning fun for both parent and child.
The Portage home visitor works to develop new skills at the child’s own pace by breaking down each task into small steps and shows parents how to practice these with the child between visits. Based on the special relationship between parent and child this method achieves frequent small successes and develops confidence in both.
