Shaw Trust Personal Development Service, Salisbury:
Shaw Trust - Ability at work
The Personal Development Service is a tailor-made programme to enable individuals to broaden their experience through personal development, work preparation, accredited training, independent living skills and work placements. The Service is open to Individuals aged 18 plus with learning, mental, sensory, physical disabilities who require personal development as part of their assessed needs, or those who wish to attend through self-funding eg Direct Payments / Individualised Budgets. Set in beautiful gardens, not far from the Salisbury Park and Ride, it is an idyllic setting to support individuals wanting to fulfil their long-term potential.

Julie Cable writes:
The service has been developed in partnership with Wiltshire County Council’s CTPLD and from discussions with individuals who attended the existing service. It is no longer block funded but instead places are ‘spot’ purchased as part of an individual’s care plan.

The Personal Development Service offers a tailor-made programme to enable individuals to broaden their experience through personal development, work preparation, accredited training, independent living skills and work placements. It aims to

●Enable individuals to lead full and purposeful lives within their community and to develop a range of friendships, activities and relationships.
●Prepare individuals to participate in all forms of employment, wherever possible in paid work, and to make a valued contribution to the world of work
●Equip individuals with independent living skills to enable them to have greater choice and control over where and how they live.

People with learning disabilities are amongst the most vulnerable and socially excluded in our society. Very few have jobs, live in their own homes or have choice over who cares for them. This really needs to change: people with learning disabilities must no longer be marginalised or excluded. 'Valuing people' sets out how the Government will provide new opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities and their families to live full and independent lives as part of their local communities. Salisbury Personal Development Service hopes to work towards this goal.

This is an exciting opportunity for everyone -Shaw Trust, Wiltshire County Council, and the organisations we work in partnership with, but more importantly, for those who access the service. I would be happy to talk to anyone who wants to know more about the service and can be reached on 07967 611 547.
