Gateway Beacon is Royal Mencap’s country wide project to improve leisure and social clubs for people with a learning disability. By capturing information, offering guidance and sharing good practice, people with a learning disability can benefit from taking part in activities that interest them, and clubs can be supported to develop in the way they want to.
Selected local Mencap societies are leading the way, South Wilts Mencap being one of these. We have been given a generous grant of £24,000 for a two-year project to work with Royal Mencap and other local societies.
The work started in late April and we hope to get the Gateway Award started in the near future. Plans are already being made with Our Cub and 4+More and everyone is really excited about it. Older members will be able to join in too and a separate scheme will be developed for them.

What is the Gateway Award?
The Gateway Award is a way for you to do lots of the different things that you enjoy. It will also help you to try out new things, be more confident, meet new people and, most importantly, have fun and be healthy!
Who can take part?
Absolutely anyone can take part. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you can do.
How does the Gateway Award work?
There are three levels in the Gateway Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold
Each level of the award has the following five parts:
- Hobbies – doing things you like
- Fitness – keeping fit and taking care of your body
- Lifestyle – staying safe and having a healthy life
- Volunteering – helping people in your community
- Gateway Challenge – doing the things you want to do
When you have finished each level of the award you will get a certificate and a badge. You will be more confident and will have learnt new skills to help you be more independent.
You will have support throughout all of the stages; from planning right the way through to award completion!
How can Mencap help you?
We will provide you with;
- A folder for your work
- Information for your supporter
- Help on how to use the website
- All the things you need to do the award
