South Wilts Mencap: Join the SWM team

South Wilts Mencap (SWM) supports people with learning disabilities; inspiring them to achieve their full potential and enabling them and their families to lead fuller lives.  Our team is made up of around 45 people, some volunteers some self-employed part timers but all with a single purpose.

With the exception of Shop volunteers, it is necessary to apply for Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance for all members of our team.  We reserve the right to request references.

We are always keen to welcome volunteers to our team.  From helping out at Fun Days and Discos to sparing a few hours a week working in the Mencap shop, we are always delighted to hear how you may be able to help.

A voluntary post

South Wilts MENCAP (SWM) is the local South Wiltshire branch of the national Royal MENCAP charity.  As such, SWM is autonomous and mostly self-funding, having an annual turnover of just over £100,000.  We have an urgent need for a new Treasurer, as the current long serving incumbent has pressing business interests in London and overseas that are severely restricting his availability.

We employ a professional bookkeeper who is also a qualified accountant, so the voluntary role of Treasurer relates to understanding the principles and practice of good decision making, sound management and monitoring performance.   Although important the post is not too demanding on time, typically requiring some 12 hours per month to include one evening committee meeting.  Further to this there would be some additional hours for annual budget preparation, end of year procedures and attending our AGM.

By becoming part of SWM you would be part of a charity that provides a great deal of support for people with learning disabilities.  You will see from our website that we are vibrant and forward looking, achieving much within a relatively small budget.  As a member of the Executive Committee and a Trustee you would find the post exceedingly rewarding.
