South Wilts Mencap: Join the SWM team

Join our team

South Wilts Mencap (SWM) supports people with learning disabilities; inspiring them to achieve their full potential and enabling them and their families to lead fuller lives.  Our team is made up of around 80 people, some volunteers, some self-employed part timers but all with a single purpose.

With the exception of Shop volunteers, it is necessary to apply for Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance for all members of our team.  We reserve the right to request references.

We are always keen to welcome volunteers to our team.  From helping out at Fun Days and Discos to sparing a few hours a week working in the Mencap shop, we are always delighted to hear how you may be able to help.

Recruitment of Trustees

This is an exciting time for South Wilts Mencap and to ensure we are fit for the future, we have restructured our organisation.  We want to continue our work in making a real difference to the lives of people in Salisbury and South Wilts with learning disabilities.  In order to do this, we are looking to appoint a Chair along with other new trustees to help us lead from the front.

In the role of Chair, we are looking for someone who is a strong leader with previous corporate experience.  All trustees will make a real difference to the lives of our members as well as gain new skills for their professional development.  Due to the nature of the charity’s activity’s base, it would be preferred if applicants work and/or live in Salisbury or the surrounding area.

We have a number of paid contractors to provide services to SWM, but ultimately, we have a core of dedicated volunteers.  Our range of services are offered to five year olds through to adults and they include clubs, activities and a holiday scheme.  We also provide support for families and carers by way of signposting.  We work with a range of organisations including Royal Mencap Society, Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Parent Carer Council, Salisbury City Council, New Art Centre, La Folia, Exeter House School and Wiltshire Creative.

Should you wish to find out more about us or apply, please view the SWM Trustee Job Description and SWM Chair Trustees Job Description and application pack, which includes details of how to apply.

South Wilts Mencap Shop Volunteers

South Wilts Mencap is looking for Shop Volunteers

Are you looking to volunteer?

Why not turn your time into time that makes a difference?

Our shop in Salisbury has been trading for over 35 years and is vital to us continuing to provide a range of services to the Learning Disability community in South Wiltshire.  For every £1 spent in the shop, the charity gets 88 pence. So, if it’s because you want to improve your CV, meet new people, or put your creative skills to use, come along to our shop and see how you could be part of our amazing volunteer team.

The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm. Even one shift per week can make the difference and means we can continue to run social activities for our members – as well as the enjoyment, fulfilment and development of your own life.

Our volunteers have a great time working as a team and find their confidence increases, as well as improving on their customer service skills, retail experience and problem solving.  The three roles available are –

Front of shop – This will involve lots of customer contact, so a friendly sunny disposition is vital.  You will be using your customer service skills to full use helping with customers and replenishing stock.

Back of shop – This be sorting through all donations, largely clothes, preparing these for the shop and pricing in accordance with our pricing structure.

Bric a Brac specialists – We receive a vast range of these donations and need someone passionate over everything from a Ming vase to a casserole dish!  We would welcome a bric a brac specialist at any time throughout our opening hours.

We are looking for volunteers preferably on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to either work 9:45am-1pm or 1pm-4:15pm. We can offer flexibility to accommodate willing volunteers.

So, pop into our shop at 16 Catherine Street, Salisbury on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday and speak to Sharon or Pauline for more information and introduction to the shop. Alternatively, phone 01722 333 323 and arrange a time to visit.
