Fundraising & Marketing Trustees

South Wilts Mencap supports people with learning disabilities. Celebrating our 60th anniversary, we are looking for a trustee with a background in marketing and/or fundraising to help raise our profile and raise funds.

All trustees will make a real difference to the lives of our members as well as gain new skills for their professional development.  It would be preferred if applicants work and/or live in Salisbury or the surrounding area.

Whilst we ensure that the Board remains refreshed through time limited directorships, we cherish the longevity of support from many volunteers over the years and celebrate our rich history as a local charity.

We are currently looking for trustees specifically with the following attributes:

  • Knowledge/expertise of communications or marketing; and
  • Experience of running successful fundraising campaigns.

We are also looking for any combination of the following skills or attributes from the applicant:

  • An excellent understanding of the different operational contexts of the public, voluntary and private sectors;
  • Knowledge of Salisbury and the surrounding villages;
  • An empathy towards people with learning disabilities;
  • A strong commitment to organisational development and improvement;
  • Excellent communication skills, political awareness and an affinity with the vision of SWM;
  • Knowledge or understanding of Information Technology and/or business systems;
  • Knowledge/expertise of our local health service, social care or Local Government;
  • Knowledge/expertise of the law; in general, or with an expertise of charity or disability law; and
  • Previous non-executive experience, with the strategic skills and commercial acumen necessary to ensure excellent governance and Board performance.

We are also very keen to hear from younger people looking for trustee experience or from anyone with a family member who has a learning disability. In addition, there is an expectation that any trustee will be IT literate and will be able to commit to a minimum of 12 meetings per year, plus an Annual General Meeting. All trustees, including the chair, are appointed for a term of four years with an option for reelection for a further term of four years.  

The Board meets in central Salisbury monthly, in the evening. It is expected that trustees communicate via email in between meetings and arrange sub-group meetings as and when required to complete agreed tasks. The time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month for emails, phone calls and ad-hoc meetings.
