TRIBUTE TO JEAN BURDEN

Jean Burden died on 11 August 2026 after 43 years of service working in the South Wilts Mencap Shop, a remarkable and very long-standing volunteer.  Jean started in December 1983 when the shop was founded with just one clothes rail – we now have 14 rails to accommodate clothes and household items!

Jean took over the management, with Anne Finch, of the Shop in 2005 and they were given life membership of the Society in recognition of their dedication. 

Jean’s commitment to working every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday has been outstanding. Her contribution to unpacking thousands of black bags, sorting and pricing bric-a-brac and also serving behind the counter is huge – not to forget all the silver and brass she cleaned as well.  

Although Jean was widowed many years ago her family continued to give her great pleasure and she enjoyed having them for Sunday roast dinner with much preparation and cooking! She leaves three daughters, Mandy, Beverley and Kate and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
