TRIBUTE TO JEAN BURDEN
Angela Scott shares her memories of Jean Burden who passed away on 11th August
“Jean Burden died on 11 August 2026 after 43 years of service working in the S W Mencap Shop. This is really remarkable! Jean started in December 1983 with Anne Finch, Maureen Thomas and Betty Williams as the manager. Anne tells me (AS) that at this time the Shop, which was at 26 Catherine Street, started with one clothes rail. We now have 14 rails to accommodate clothes and household items! The Shop relocated to 16 Catherine Street in 1999.
After Betty died in 2005, Jean and Anne took over the management of the Shop ,working on different days aided by Rita Rowland and Jill Mortimer. Jean and Anne were given life membership of the Society in recognition of their dedication.
Jean’s commitment to working every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday has been outstanding. Her contribution to unpacking thousands of black bags, sorting and pricing bric a brac and also serving behind the counter is huge – not to forget all the silver and brass she cleaned as well!
Jean was widowed many years ago and her family gave her great pleasure. Jean enjoyed having the family for Sunday roast dinner with much preparation and cooking! She leaves three daughters, Mandy, Beverley and Kate and grandchildren and great grandchildren.”
